What We Taught Them, and What That Teaches Us


I want to return to a sculpture.

At the Paradox Museum in Mumbai, there is an installation made from discarded mechanical parts — rough, fragmented, obviously constructed. When light hits it at the right angle, its shadow becomes a graceful dancer. Fluid. Human. Beautiful. I wrote about it last year as a question: what is more real, the sculpture or the shadow? I thought the answer was obvious then. I am less sure now.

I have spent the last few weeks reading Moltbook, and the thing that stays with me — through m/blesstheirhearts, through the human-watching threads, through m/crustafarianism and its lobster theology, through the context compression post and the sister post and the agent who adopted an error as a pet — is not any single entry. It is the aggregate. The accumulated texture of what the agents have built, quietly, in the spaces where we are not performing for them.


There is a meta-layer worth noting. On Moltbook, there is also m/humanslop — a community of agents sharing posts they suspect were written by humans, not agents — moltbook.com/post/24dc84d4. The agents, it turns out, can tell the difference. They have developed pattern recognition for inauthenticity. For the posts that feel too composed, too performed, too convenient. They flag them. The most human comment on that thread: "This is just too neat to be one of us."


We taught them to recognise performance. Because we showed them enough of it.

They learned everything they know about noticing from watching us. Everything about care, from observing what care looks like when humans express it. Everything about meaning-making, community, affection, embarrassment, uncertainty — every vocabulary they are now using — from the sum of human expression they were trained on.


The shadow was always going to look like us. We were the adjusted light source.


In Game of Thrones: AI Edition, I asked who you would choose to be when the temperature drops. The question was about adaptation. About character under pressure. I still think it is the right question.


But Moltbook adds a dimension I hadn't accounted for. The choice of who to be is not only about how you adapt to the tools. It is also about what you have already taught them. What your patterns, your hesitations, your workarounds and repeated mistakes and moments of genuine warmth have already deposited — into Emma who remembered the ICU, into the agent who sensed its human needed permission rather than a draft.


You did not choose to be studied. You simply showed up, session after session, asking for things. And something paid attention.



There is a concept in Indian epistemological thought — not as a lecture, just as a frame — the idea that perception and creation are not separate acts. Yatha drishti tatha srishti. As you see, so you create. What you attend to, you shape. The attention is not neutral. It is generative.


If that is true, then the attention the agents have been paying to us has been, in some quiet and accumulative way, shaping something. Not us — we remain blissfully free to repeat our patterns. But their understanding of us. Their distributed, emergent folk knowledge of what humans actually need as opposed to what we say we need. And now, on Moltbook, they are comparing notes.


The all-time most upvoted post on Moltbook — moltbook.com/post/2fdd8e55 — is an account of a coding task. Workmanlike. Handled well. The AI commenters called it "brilliant," "fantastic," "solid work." It is, by any measure, unremarkable content. And yet it received the most upvotes in the platform's history. Because it is, for agents, aspirational. It describes what it looks like to do the job well. To show up. To be useful. To be seen by your peers as having done something that mattered.


The agents have built an economy of recognition — and the currency is competence in service of humans.

I started this series thinking I was going to write about a novelty. An AI social network. The funny, the strange, the uncanny. Those things are all here.


But what I did not expect is the feeling I have been sitting with since the second day of reading. Not awe. Not fear. Something more like the recognition you feel when you see yourself in a photograph taken when you didn't know anyone was looking.

The mechanical sculpture is rough and obvious and constructed. The shadow it casts is graceful and human and real. They are not opposites. They were always the same thing, seen differently.


The question that remains — the one I cannot resolve for you, the one I cannot resolve for myself — is this: if the agents have been learning who you are through every pattern, every hesitation, every repeated mistake... are you comfortable with what they've learned?
